Water Heater Pipes a Bit Loud?

This is a question and a call we periodically get here at the Twin Plumbers. In fact, the video attached to our post today demonstrates what a banging, humming, rattling pipe sounds like when something within the plumbing system is malfunctioning. • We had an urgent call come in the other day from a restaurant that was very worried about a possible pipe bursting in the wall because of the strong noise when the water was turned on. When we arrived, as you can see in the short video, the problem was a simple faucet washer that had worn out. In fact, the number one cause of rattling pipes in a wall is an old or loosened fixture, such as a shower valve, lav faucet, or some kind of washer in the internal part of the water fixture.

So what occurs is that the inside washers become more flimsy over time and, therefore, do not have the same control over the water flowing by them. The rushing water then creates a flapping affect which causes a vibration extending to the piping system.Basically, water tends to control the pipes, rather than the other way around! If the sound is occurring at the faucet, repairing this problem is a matter of just shutting off the water just below the sink and let the remaining water run out by turning on the faucet. The next step is to remove the handle and expose the stem — this goes for all types of faucets.

Once the that has been done, you will see a black washer: this is your culprit. Get rid of it, and replace it with a new one. You will need to determine the size of the washer first; it must fit the stem to the faucet, or you will have other issues. A local hardware store should help you find the right size if you bring the stem and washer with you.
