Does My Home's Plumbing Affect the HVAC System?

Although plumbing and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) are different systems, there are a few ways in which plumbing can affect your home’s HVAC equipment.

  • The first way can occur with the HVAC “condensate line” (also called the condensate drain or condensate drain line). It’s a piece of plastic (or occasionally metal) pipe that runs from your heating and cooling system to the outside of your home. Its purpose is to carry away the water droplets resulting from the humidity released as air is heated or cooled. Sometimes, however, instead of emptying outside, it connects to the sewer line. In this case, a sewer blockage will cause the collected water to back up inside the condensate line until it eventually overflows onto the floor or in the ceiling.
  • Another way plumbing affects the HVAC system is when gases from leaking sewage pipes get into your ducting. The gases and foul odor then circulate throughout your home.
  • Finally, during situations of severe sewage backup or flooding, wastewater itself can get into your home’s HVAC system directly, contaminating ducts and equipment with dangerous bacteria and toxins.

What Are the Signs That My HVAC System Is Leaking?

Besides experiencing any of the above, here are some other ways to tell if a part of your HVAC system is leaking:

  • Your electrical bill has suddenly spiked.
  • Air quality in your home seems poor, stuffy, or you’re noticing smells from outside while indoors.
  • Water is pooling around your AC condenser unit.
  • You’ve noticed higher humidity inside your home than usual.
  • You can see ice crystals on your AC unit’s evaporator coil (the part containing refrigerant that removes heat from the air).
  • When you turn on your system to heat or cool the air, you hear it running, but the temperature doesn’t change much, if at all.
