Rats Infestation, What Causes It & How To Deal With It?

Twin Home Experts is a leading rat control company in Los Angeles and we are seeing more rat infestation than any time before.

Here’s WHY rats are being attracted to your home.

The first thing you need to understand is that these are the smartest creatures and they have become 2 steps ahead of humans in respect to getting into your home and catching them:

    # 1 – ENTRY POINTS TO THE INSIDE OF YOUR HOME

Rats need a hiding space that they can nest and have their babies. They love homes that have direct access to your attic or some way into your home, then from there they create a nesting ground, and that when it all starts.

You will start to hear consistent scratching sounds in your walls or ceiling at night.

They leave their scent and this is an invitation for other rodents to come on in.

#2 – FOOD LEFT INSIDE YOUR HOME

We see this all the time, where homeowners leave their food on the countertop such as peanuts, leftover food, potatoes, and especially pet food. These foods and crumbs have to be left in a sealed container. This is a great food source and will attract them right into your home.

    # 3 – SEWER DRAIN SYSTEM

We are seeing a major infestation of Rats coming through the sewer system, then they chew their way through the pipes, then into your walls or ceiling.

This is one of the most challenging for rodent companies to locate. If you don’t find this drain breach on time, this can lead to major destruction to your home and can be costly.

    # 4 – TREES HANGING OVER ROOF

This is a perfect highway for rats to venture, then most of the time they get through the bathroom ventilation fan that terminates through the roof, this is typically wide open, so they climb through, chew through the vent materials, then start nesting inside your bathroom ceiling.

Here is a video showing the bathroom damage caused by rats.

    #5 – Rats Scent

Rats leave their urine and feces, which is a scent that attracts other rats into your home. This needs to be addressed by deep cleaning using enzymes to kill bacteria and getting rid of the smell. Then entry points need to be sealed so they don’t come back into the property.

    # 6 – Tubs

Rats love nesting under tubs. This is a safe secure place for them. They typically will create a runway by chewing through a pipe to gain access into your tub. Or if the tub access is fully accessible from the crawl space, they will jump under your tub and start a huge nesting ground.

    Case Study

    June 2020, Palm Springs CA.

We arrived at a call where sewer rats came in from the city sewer system, the mind-blowing thing that I can’t understand today, is the house was on a slab foundation, the rats chewed through the underground sewer pipe, burrowed through the sand 3 feet away from the tub, then nested under the tub for 2 years until without the homeowner knowing. They started to hear and the smell of rat’s urine came leaching through the walls so bad. The big question is “How Did The Rats Know Where To Chew To Get To The Tub If There Underground?” This is how smart rats are.

    Conclusion

The best thing to do to stop attracting rats into your home is to be super proactive and make sure that ALL possible entry points are sealed correctly, even your all your vent pipes on your roof. Inspect under tubs if you have access. Twin home experts are here to help with all your rodent issues. If you need our assistance please contact us by clicking here for an appointment.
