The Right Gear and Training is Essential to Properly Cleaning a Drain

Here at the Twin plumbers, we clean a lot of drains on a daily & nightly basis in the Los Angeles area.We have cleared drains from showers, tubs, sinks, toilets, and outside area drains to the main sewer pipe outside the property. There are a number of reasons why drain stoppages occur, from minor buildup to major buildup inside the pipe, to breaks in the pipe, to root intrusion and many more. There are many customers out there that assume drain cleaning is just a very simple process and not much to it.

Having the right snake for the right application is the key to a safe drain clearing project. Having the right gear is also essential, like rubber soled boots, eye protection, and heavy duty gloves when operating any drain cleaning electrical machines.

Here are a list of some of the dangers in clearing a drain pipe:

    1. Plugging the electrical cord in to a NON GFCI outlet.
    2. Operating the machine in standing water.
    3. Pushing the cable into the line aggressively.
    4. Getting the cable jammed into a break or roots.
    5. Cleaning a drain on a roof, through a roof vent.
    6. Retrieving cable, especially when it’s a very long cable.
    7. When drain fixtures are back to back and the cable goes through the other side without you knowing.
    8. When your clearing a drain line in a building and you push the stoppage to another unit and it floods.
    9. Running a drain cleaning machine on a ladder and it binds up.

Drain cleaning definitely takes skill. One of our Los Angeles skilled drain technicians Tony Macias, who’s been with The Twin Plumbers for over 13 years and has cleared more than 5000 drains, says, “It takes time to gain the knowledge & awareness of having a feeling of the cable. After a while you begin to understand what your clearing, giving you the ability to move forward or stop to prevent dangers to you and the pipe.”

Another one of our skilled drain cleaners is Manny who says, “When it comes to main sewer line cleaning, it’s imperative to know what your cleaning first. Running a sewer camera prior to inserting the cable is always a great way to prevent any dangerous situations for us and the property owner.”
