Trenchless Water Line Replacement

Trenchless Water Line Replacement

Why are we so pumped about trenchless plumbing? With trenchless technology, the Twin Plumbers can give you a brand new water line without having to dig up the old one!

The Twin Plumbers wanted to take time out and answer some questions on trenchless water line replacement. We also went a step further and visited the leaders and makers of trenchless water line tools and puller technology, “TRIC TOOLS,” to get real answers from the source!

(NOTE: If you hired a contractor that owns TRIC tools ,thats a good start! It shows that you’re hiring a certified trenchless contractor who cares about quality. The first step to a trenchless job done right is showing up with the right tools.)

We just successfully finished a large trenchless water line replacement project for a storage facility in Los Angeles that was well over 300 ft long and 5 ft deep.

The issue was caused by several pipe breaks under the asphalt from a PVC 1 1/2 pipe. This is why, here at the Twin Plumbers, we NEVER install PVC pipe for a high pressure systems. Save your PVC pipe for your NON-pressurized pipes (i.e. sprinkler heads ,etc.), not the ones that go underground.

Anyhow, the great thing for us was that because it was PVC pipe and it was a straight shot, it makes it the perfect candidate for trenchless water line replacement. What we did was we used our acoustic leak detection equipment to identify and pin point the break, and then we excavated down to gain access to the broken pipe. Once we accessed the pipe, we cut out the broken section and ran our micro camera down the PVC pipe to map out what direction it was running and identify if there were any connections feeding or branching off that main. Once we determined all of these important factors, we devised and implemented an exact protocol for execution.

Alright, let’s boil some of that down. Here’s a checklist of trenchless water line replacement DOs and DON’Ts. These are the scenarios where it’s right — and where it’s not right — to perform the trenchless procedure. If you see that your plumber isn’t following these practices, it may be time to switch to a different contractor:

The DOs

  • If your existing water line is made of PVC or plastic, you’re good to DO!
  • If your water line is a straight run, you’re good to DO!
  • If your water line is deeper than 2 ft in the ground, you’re good to DO!
  • If your water line is at least an inch thick, you’re good to DO!

The DON’Ts

  • If your existing water line has multiple turns, DON’T do it!
  • If your water line runs close to a gas line or underground infrastructure (such as electrical wiring or buried concrete), DON’T do it!
  • If your water line is less than 2 ft deep in the ground, DON’T do it!
  • If your water line is running directly under several trees with large root structures, DON’T do it!

Well, hopefully this helped you gain some insight on your trenchless water line replacement project. If we missed anything or you have more questions, please give us or TRIC Tools a call.
