Stop Water Leaks Before They Destroy Your Home

They say seeing is believing… which might actually be true when it comes to ghosts or the Grand Canyon, but water leaks? Quite the contrary, actually. If you have a leak in your home you chances are you won’t be able to directly see water leaking from a pipe and into the home. But just because you won’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there! There are many other ways to figure out if you have a leak somewhere in your home whether it’s beneath the floor, behind the walls or in the ceiling.

Signs You Have a Water Leak

  1. High water bills: Have you noticed the amount on your bill was higher than normal this past month? Well, if you know it’s not because the utility company increased their rates or because your family used more water than normal, then you might have a water leak on your hands.
  2. Check water meter reading: Some people may not know how to do this: Turn all off all the water in your home – including each faucet, fixture and appliance. Now, watch the meter and see if it starts to change. If it does, then you probably have a leak. Rule of thumb: the faster the meter moves, the worse your clog probably is. However, even if your meter isn’t changing as you’re watching, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are in the clear. To be sure, leave the water off for 10 minutes and check again. If it has moved, even though no fixtures were on, you have a leak on your hands.
  3. Monitor how much water you use: In a recent study, the Environmental Protection Agency found that if a family of four is using more than 12,000 gallons of water per month, you could be risking a water leak.
  4. Inspect your toilet: A leaky toilet can hemorrhage in excess of 200 gallons of water a day! So you need be mindful of your toilet and check it periodically to make sure it’s running properly. Twin Plumbers tip: check your toilet for a leak by putting a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank—if the color shows up in your bowl without flushing, then you have a leak.
  5. Check your sprinkler system: We see a lot of sprinkler and home irrigation systems are these days and find that they are a very common source of water leaks. Water leaks are not a problem confined to the home. In fact, a sprinkler system with even the smallest leak could be wasting over 6,000 gallons of water per month.
