Mold Growth and Mold Remediation in Los Angeles

This is a video we took a while back while performing a mold remediation service (as well as HEPA vac service) for this home in Los Angeles. We’re posting it because it’s mold season here in Los Angeles: conditions are perfect for mold and mildew to thrive around your windows and in other areas of your home that are warm and wet. We thought we’d share with you a few homowner tips about avoiding mold growth and what to look for if you think you have an issue:

Mold thrives when there’s moisture, and now that we’re in the middle of the city’s official rainy season (which in Los Angeles is recognized as falling between October and April) it’s probable that some homes are experiencing mold problems. Luckily, it’s been particularly dry this year.

How can you prevent mold from growing in your home?

  • Dry Surfaces – Typically, mold takes about 24 to 48 hours to grow in suitable conditions. That means taking care of moisture problems immediately — leaving materials damp, even just for a day or two, can cause a mold issue for your home. After you wash your clothes, for instance, dry them immediately.
  • Prevent Water Leaks – If you suspect you have a leak, address it immediately. Call a plumber who has a thermal imaging camera to perform detection — they’ll find the source of water in your walls and give you a prompt repair. Signs of leaks include a loss of water pressure, higher utility bills, and discoloration on surfaces from water damage.
  • Insulate When rooms are insulated properly, they maintain higher temperatures, reducing condensation. This removes opportunities for mold to form on cold wet surfaces such as concrete walls, metal pipes, water tanks, and windows (like in the video).
  • Ventilate Your Rooms – Humidity helps mold grow faster, so take steps to draw that muggy heat out of your living spaces. Air conditioners and exhaust fans reduce household humidity, as do dehumidifiers. Pay special attention to ventilating your kitchens and bathrooms.

We hope these tips are helpful for preventing mold growth in your living spaces. As always, thanks for reading!
