Homeowner Tip: What to Look For Before Hiring a Plumber

Before you make that call to that local plumber to perform even the smallest repair, here is what to look for:
    1. First and foremost, verify that they are a licensed contractor.  It is very simple to check the license board with the state, and request for current license status.
    2. The next item to look for is proper insurance.  Many consumers skip checking into this.  But even the smallest job can turn into a plumbing disaster accidentally.  It doesn’t take much to cause a flood or a fire. (Twin Tip: When calling the plumber ask for a copy of his updated insurance.  A good plumber should have no issue getting you a copy).
    3. The next item to look out for is proper workers compensation insurance. If the company has employees working on your home, verity that they have workers compensation insurance to cover any workers that get hurt. (Twin Tip:  This is also something the plumber should be able to provide a copy of.  Be sure to check it is not expired).
    4. The next item to get is references.  Checking online is a good source for references, but the company may have a list they can send you also. In this case, you may be able to talk to their current customers.  It’s always nice to hear from someone that had a similar issue. (Twin Tip:  The more references they provide you the better.  If they only give you a handful….maybe it’s time to find the next one).
    5. When they do arrive, look at the appearance of their trucks and tools. Believe it or not, it’s a great indication of how well their work may be. We have found that when a plumbers tool bag is nice and neat with clean tools the work usually represents the same.
    6. Gauge their communication skills.  If they communicate well and help you understand your situation it’s a good sign of a quality plumber.
    7. Always look to see how detailed invoices and estimates are. The more detailed the better.  Clear communication with a great description is key. Be sure to check for warranty!
