A Guide to Gas Line Repair

Twin Home Experts has been a certified gas line repair company in the greater Los Angeles area for over 30 years. As experts in gas leak detection and repairing the cause, we want to share what you will learn if you ever have to search for a gas line repair company near you.

    How Are Gas Leaks Detected?

Leak Detectors: If you’re a handy homeowner and you want to find the gas leak on your own, buying a leak detector at a hardware store like Home Depot is an option. Note that this device will only work if the gas company hasn’t shut off your gas.

Bubble Test: A second gas leak detection method uses a mix of soap and water. Apply the sudsy bubbles to each gas pipe connection at the pipe threads. If you see bubbles expanding, then that’s verification you have a leak.
Professional Detection: Hiring a gas leak detection company near you is always the best option because of the potential dangers of what a gas leak can do. Having a skilled professional pinpoint a gas leak offers a whole lot of peace of mind.

TWIN TIP: When hiring a professional, be sure to ask the following questions:

#1 Do you specialize in gas leak detection or do you use subcontractors?
#2 Do you apply the gas leak detection cost to the gas leak repairs?
#3 Do you offer a guarantee or will you charge me if you don’t find the gas leak?

How Much Does Gas Leak Detection Cost?

Gas leak detection can cost anywhere from $350 to $2500. This range mainly depends on the location of the leak. Areas checked for leaks include:

    • Underground
    • Inside walls
    • Crawlspaces
    • Attics

Finding a Gas Line Installation Contractor

Most plumbers perform gas line repairs or replacements in the Los Angeles area where Twin Home Experts is located. Here are some important things to ask when searching for a gas line contractor near you:

    • Are they licensed and bonded?
    • Have they been a plumbing contractor for more than 7 years?
    • Do they offer a 5-year warranty on their work?
    • If the job is more than $500, will they get it city-inspected to make sure it’s to city code?

How Much Does a Gas Line Repair Cost?

Angie’s List posted a misleading article in March of 2018 on gas line repair & installation costs telling readers to expect to pay $120 to $1,300. This is deceiving because they don’t separate the services. Gas line installation and gas repair are two completely different tasks and services. After reading through the article, it’s super clear in our professional opinion that the real intent is to have you click through their lead generation button for their plumbers. We bet you that any natural gas line plumbers of Angie’s List will not charge those very low fees. Those are 1970 prices!

With over 30 years experience as a gas line installation contractor, Twin Home Experts offers you the real costs of gas line projects. Average gas line repair costs typically range from $250 to $950 depending on how easy it is to access where the gas pipe repair is located. Most gas line repair work is due to an old gas valve that is leaking, or gas pipe threads that fail and need to be removed and resealed. Gas pipe repair sometimes does require opening a wall or getting up in an attic or even sometimes your crawlspace. These are all factors in determining your gas line repair costs.
Underground gas repairs costs can be as low as $950 and as high as $2500. There are many factors that determine this cost including:
    • How accessible is the pipe?
    • What is the pipe size and length?
    • What materials are being used?
    • Is there concrete demolition & removal?
    • How deep is the pipe?
    • If the gas line is underground where repairs may not be feasible, a new gas pipe installation more than likely needs to occur.

The Cost of New Gas Pipe Installation

Average cost for a new gas pipe installation can range from $1200 to $10,000.

This is all determined by many factors including:
    • How many feet of pipe?
    • What is the size of the gas pipe?
    • Is the installation outside or inside?
    • How accessible is the area of the installation?
    • How many fixtures is the gas line feeding?
When hiring a professional, make sure you do the following:
    • Get 3 Estimates. Twin Home Experts always recommends getting 3 estimates to make sure you get the best deal and (more importantly) the right natural gas installer for your job.
    • Get a Warranty: Make sure you get at least a 5-year warranty from your gas line contractor for installation.
    • Get an Inspection: Make sure you get a local city gas inspection to approve the new gas line installation.

    Natural Gas Pipe Materials

When it comes to gas pipe material specifications, there are a few options that are available.

Inside Pipes. For natural gas pipes inside your home feeding appliances (oven, furnace, water heater, etc.), galvanized pipe and fittings are the best option. The most effective way to connect galvanized is using Teflon gas line tape and then applying a sealant over the Teflon tape. This provides great reassurance that your connections won’t leak.
We also recommend a flexible polymer-coated gas pipe called TracPipe® CounterStrike®. It rolls through attics very easily. The downside to TracPipe® systems is that they’re very costly. The upside is that they will never leak once installed. You have to determine labor costs using galvanized versus spending more money on TracPipe®.
Outside Pipes. When it comes to outside gas pipes that are exposed to the elements, galvanized pipe and fittings are still a good choice. You can paint the pipes using grey paint this helps prevent the look of rust.
If it’s a long gas pipe that is being exposed to the outside elements, we again recommend TracPipe® CounterStrike®. Be sure it’s the system designed for outside installation.
Underground Pipes. You have the option to go with green Scotchkote coated gas pipe which is like galvanized but has a green coating to prevent the soil and elements from deteriorating the pipe. Unless it’s a very short run, Twin Home Experts recommends staying away from this type of gas pipe system for underground use.

TWIN TIP: If your gas pipe installer uses Scotchkote for underground pipe installation, make sure they use black 20 mil gas tape to wrap and seal all the underground connections and where their wrenches scratched the pipe.

The best underground gas pipe and fittings that will NEVER leak if installed properly is going to be a polyethylene pipe gas system. As shown in the video below, we used Socket Fusion. The benefits of poly gas pipe and fittings include:
    • No deterioration
    • Flexible to withstand underground movement (unlike galvanized steel pipes)
    • Easy to roll underground
    • Cost-effective

    Hiring a Gas Line Expert

Hiring the right gas line repair or gas line installation contractor near you is super important. Don’t forget the following 3 key actions: Get at least 3 estimates for your gas repair or new gas installation; Make sure you get (at least) a 5-year warranty for your new gas line installation. (If there is going to be an issue, it will happen within 5 years.); And always get a local city inspector to approve your new gas installation.
